This preeminent position of Christ was so important for the Colossians to know because apparently they were engaging in the worship of angels according to Col 2:18. We might be tempted to snicker at this folly until we realize that worship of anything else other than God is idolatry. We can worship others when we fear what they think more than what God thinks; we can worship our own abilities or intellect or even gifting as we try to position ourselves above others; we can even worship the blessings of God which he gives us graciously, apart from any merit of our own. When we do this we, just like the Colossians, fall into the category of Rom 1:25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. How do we avoid this heinous sin?—By constantly considering that Christ is supreme; Christ is the King of the Universe; Christ is the Lord of our souls. He alone is worthy of all our worship and submission.
Moreover, we must realize that apart from Christ there is no sustenance and thus there can be no growth.
So according to what is found in this passage about Christ, what other kind of Lord and Savior would we need in order to trust in him fully and follow him completely? In light of his preeminent position, how could someone else provide more certainty for what we need now and for what will take place for eternity?
