We know from Scripture that God is the source of truth, God is the revealer of truth and God is the enabler of people knowing the truth. Even the most common teachings of Scripture presuppose these understandings of truth. For instance, listen to how essential knowing the truth is, as it relates to key aspects of the Christian life:

Worship—John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
Freedom from sin—John 8:31 If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
Sanctification—John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
Knowing God—1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth…
Obedience—1 John 2:4 The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in himLove—1 John 3:18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.

None of those things can take place apart from an objective truth that is both outside of ourselves and knowable. It has to be objective because the unchanging God defines worship and holiness and obedience and love. And it has to be knowable because he expects conformity to the truth and when there is conformity to the truth, he receives glory.

The world despises both of those realities because if there is an objective truth, then there is an accountability to that truth, since we cannot adjust it based on our own desires. And the same goes for the knowability of the truth. If that is true, then there is no excuse that will stand on judgment day, such as “there are too many religions to know which one is true” or “there isn’t any way to properly validate the truth claims of Christianity.” Those excuses are smokescreens and to know the truth is to be rescued from that kind darkened understanding. That realization is important when you come across someone who is completely devoid of the truth; namely there should be a stunning acknowledgement of how far any of us can and would go apart from knowing the truth from God.

So if the Lord has granted you an understanding of the truth, is your gratefulness expressed by submitting your heart it and pursuing to know more of it with greater and greater tenacity? If not, your worship of God, your obedience to God and your love for God will be severely hindered.
