Jesus’ mighty display of provision at the wedding feast in John 2 should greatly assist us in our understanding that we are completely helpless as it relates to fulfilling our greatest need. What was anyone at the wedding going to be able to do about the absence of wine? Absolutely nothing. So what happens if Jesus was not attending this wedding?—A disastrous and shameful occurrence for the bridegroom.

Likewise, what happens if he did not come as the Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world?—We would all experience everlasting judgment. Furthermore, what happens if he does not supply his Spirit who empowers all who believe to conform to his likeness?—Certainly no sanctification.

Hopefully we are all discerning how desperate we are for Christ, not only for conversion, but also for our growth in Christlikeness. And hopefully, we are discerning the significance of Christ bringing grace upon grace out of his fullness because he supplies what we ultimately need based on no merit of our own.
