We must consider our marriage as incredibly bigger and more significant than just the union of two people. God’s purposes transcend the personal fulfillment of two people in marriage. Do you view how you serve, talk, act and even think about your spouse with a grander purpose in mind? And then when you fail to serve, talk, act and think how you should, do you seek to reconcile in a way that is pleasing to Christ? It is very clear that the way we view and implement our respective roles in marriage has many ramifications on how the gospel is exemplified in our marriages. Here is an important question: Does your presence in the home as a spouse and parent make it easier or more difficult for the others in your home to understand the gospel as they watch what you say and do? Do you demonstrate you are living for a greater purpose than your own fulfillment, namely God’s purpose of putting forth the relationship between Christ and the church in your marriage? That is the only way God will get glory as we participate in what He has instituted.
