Mark 10:1-16 – And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again. And again, as was his custom, he taught them.

And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh.What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

13 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

What does it mean to receive the kingdom like a child?  I’m taking this statement in Mark 10:15 as a similar teaching to Matt. 18:3: “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”  This seems to indicate that there’s something about how children receive things which makes them fit to enter into the kingdom.  Hiebert commented that receive stresses that, “the kingdom must be accepted as a gift; it is not a human achievement, is never gained on the basis of human merit. Just as a child receives a gift from a loved one in guileless trustfulness, so the kingdom of God must be received as God’s gift in simple trusting faith.”[1]

James Edwards explains this concept from a slightly different angle: “[Here] children are not blessed for their virtues but for what they lack: they come only as they are—small, powerless, without sophistication, as the overlooked and dispossessed of society. To receive the kingdom of God as a child is to receive it as one who has no credits, no clout, no claims.23 A little child has absolutely nothing to bring, and whatever a child receives, he or she receives by grace on the basis of sheer neediness rather than by any merit inherent in him- or herself.”[2]
