How does sin affect God’s disposition towards mankind?
Moreover, what does sin reveal about mankind’s disposition towards God?
The reality of both answers is that an insurmountable barrier has been established between God and man in which no human being can overcome. First of all, there is the natural inclination and pursuit of every person to be self-autonomous and self-governing instead of worshipful and submissive towards the One who created all things, rules over all things and is worthy of all glory and worship. Scripture is very clear that one’s sinful nature cannot be changed or eradicated by any measure of self-reform, no matter how valiant the effort. Consider for instance—Jer 13:23 “Can the Ethiopian change his skin Or the leopard his spots? Then you also can do good Who are accustomed to doing evil.”
Furthermore, even if sinners could be genuinely interested in making things right with God (which is a hypothetical impossibility), to truly reconcile a relationship, the offended party must accept what the offender offers to bring about peace. Herein lies another massive problem—What could sinful people bring to a holy God that he would accept to remove the infinite offense of sin and turn away his just wrath? Even if a sinful heart could generate good works, no amount of such works could atone from sin because those works could never be done in perfect holiness. In the end, God would have to do something to reconcile sinners to himself. And God has done something in the offering of his Son to accomplish a salvation in Jesus Christ that is so full and completely finished, that it should lead his people to a full trust in the Savior who brought it about.
