Any person with a heart for God would admit that forgetfulness of his salvation is something to avoid, but what leads to forgetfulness? Is it merely human weakness, just like when we forget where we put our car keys? That’s unlikely and Moses sheds light on the answer as he prepares the people of Israel with these words in Deut 8:11 Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today; 12 otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them, 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

This text puts forth that forgetting the greatness of our salvation is directly tied to forgetting our need, which can be classified as self-sufficiency and/or self-righteousness. Thus, as Paul describes salvation in Acts 26:18 by stating it’s when one is granted spiritual sight, protection of being under God’s influence, forgiveness of all their sins and a glorious inheritance with God and his people, there is no legitimate excuse to forget our need.
